On January 20th, the DC Abrahamic House hosted a virtual gathering to explore what various faith traditions teach about humanity’s responsibility to care for creation. Secular Franciscan Ms. Kelly Moltzen, OFS, invited br. Cristofer Fernández, OFM Conv. to participate as the Catholic/Franciscan perspective on the panel. Ms. Moltzen and br. Cristofer became colleagues after participating in a Franciscan Earth Corps retreat in New York hosted by Franciscan Action Network (FAN) during the summer of 2014. Earth Corps is no longer an active program of FAN because its objectives have been subsumed under the current Justice Circles program.
Inspired by Scriptural Reasoning, a method for comparing texts on a common theme found within different Holy Books, the panelists shared and compared texts and modern-day statements about humanity’s relationship with the environment from within Abrahamic and non-Abrahamic religious traditions. This was a wonderful opportunity to learn and reflect upon what different faith traditions have to say about ecology and care for our common home.
