Franciscans are celebrating significant anniversaries over the next four years.
1223 – 2023: the Rule and Christmas in Greccio
1224 – 2024: the Stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi
1225 – 2025: the Canticle of the Creatures
1226 – 2026: the Death of St. Francis of Assisi (Transitus)
On January 7, 2023, the official opening of the Franciscan Centenary took place in Greccio, Italy. All Ministers General of the Franciscan Family were present. This event commemorated especially the two celebrations for 2023: the 800th anniversary of the Later Rule and Christmas at Greccio. After a multi-lingual opening in the small shrine church of Greccio, participants joined in a procession to the grotto where St. Francis instituted the nativity scene during Christmas in 1223.
