Stories from Our Lady of Consolation Basilica and National Shrine

The Annual Novena to Our Lady of Consolation begins on August 6th at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio. Each year, pilgrims gather in Carey – many camping in the field near Shrine Park – to celebrate, listen, and pray together.

Throughout the day there are opportunities for Mass and Reconciliation. Each evening the Upper Basilica is filled with pilgrims as they listen to the message of hope and healing.

+Br. Jeffrey Hines considered his time spent ministering at the Shrine a highlight of his life. For more than 30 years, Brother Jeffrey welcomed thousands of pilgrims to Our Lady of Consolation. Many were seeking healing from physical, mental, or spiritual pain and problems. Friar Jeffrey listened to their stories and prayed with them. In the  podcast episode below, he shares some of his memories with Br. Randy Kin.

(+Br. Jeffrey passed away in 2020 in Bloomington, Minnesota. In addition to his service at OLC Shrine, Br. Jeffrey also served as a guide in Assisi, Italy; Director of Franciscan Retreats and Spirituality Center in Prior Lake, Minnesota; Secretary for the Province of Our Lady of Consolation; and in the education and formation of student Friars.)

This year’s Novena preacher is Fr. Richard Kaley OFM Conv. On August 14th, the annual candlelight procession will begin at 9PM. The presider for Mass in Shrine Park will be Most Reverend John Stowe OFM Conv., Bishop of Lexington, KY, and former rector of the Shrine. For a complete schedule, please visit the OLC Shrine website.
