Only Catholic Priest in Greenland

Fr. Tomaž Majcen OFM Conv. is the only Catholic priest in Greenland. He is part of a community of three friars who came to Denmark as missionaries from the Province of St. Jerome in Croatia. In 2023, the Bishop of Copenhagen asked if they would take over pastoral care in Greenland. Fr. Majcen serves two parishes, one in Copenhagen and the other in Nuuk.

In an article from OSV News, written by Gina Christian, Church must stand for peace, says Greenland priest, as US eyes takeover, Fr. Macjen talks about how the Trump administration’s stated plans to acquire Greenland is concerning to the residents.

Most Greenlanders feel strongly about who they are and about their right to decide their own future. … People are worried, but they are also very clear: this is our land, our culture, our home. … The Church must be a place of peace and hope. We must stand for human dignity, for the rights of the Inuit people, and for dialogue instead of threats.
