Franciscan Center in the News

The Franciscan Center in Baltimore provides fresh cooked meals, counseling, clothing and more to help individuals and families in crisis. The ministry was started by the Franciscan Sisters of Baltimore in 1891. The Center was founded in 1968 by Franciscan Sr. Irene Marshiano.

In late 2023, the Conventual Franciscan Province of Our Lady of the Angels (OLA) took on the sponsorship of the Center. “The Sisters opened the center in the late 60s with some of our friars,” said Friar Michael Heine, Minister Provincial of OLA Province. “But now as many communities are, the sisters are slowly divesting themselves and their sponsored ministries. And so, we decided to say ‘Yes’ to this invitation.

In late 2024, the street was named after Sr. Irene, foundress of the Franciscan Center. Here’s the story from WMAR-TV.
