Conventual Franciscan friars have served as the official confessors at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome since 1774, when Pope Clement XIV entrusted this ministry to them. An international group of about 14 full-time friars hears confessions in approximately 15 different languages.
Earlier this year, Friar Jacob Carazo was admitted to the college of Confessors at St. Peter’s Basilica. Priests are nominated to this special ministry and must undergo an interview process. They must have a background in moral theology and canon law and be able to speak and understand at least two languages.
In July, Friar Timothy Dore stayed a few weeks in Vatican City to assist with Confessions. He described his days as full and grace-filled, hearing confessions six hours per day, mostly in Spanish. He gives a great ‘tour’ of his day in the brief video below.
