Franciscan Leaders Gather at St. Bonaventure University
As the Franciscan family prepares to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi (1226–2026), friars from across the United States gathered at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York, for a important conference entitled “Transitus in an Era of Epochal Change.”
Held from June 10-13, 2026, and sponsored by the Franciscan Institute, the gathering brought together friars from the Conventual and Capuchin Franciscans and the Friars Minor, for prayer, reflection, study, and dialogue as they look toward the 2026 centenary celebrations and consider the relevance of Franciscan spirituality in today’s rapidly changing world.
The conference was organized by a team of First Order friars led by Friar Wayne Hellmann, OFM Conv. and featured three distinguished speakers who explored key writings and themes from the Franciscan tradition.
Professor Joshua Benson, PhD, lectured on “The Testament: Remembering in an Era of Change.” Drawing on the Testament of St. Francis, Professor Benson reflected on the importance of memory, identity, and fidelity to the Franciscan vision amid rapid cultural change. Responding to his lecture were Friars Larry Hayes, OFM, and Thomas Piolata, OFM Cap., who offered perspectives from their own ministries and Franciscan experiences.
Professor Jay Hammond, PhD, lectured on “The Admonitions: Living in an Era of Change.” Exploring the enduring wisdom of the Admonitions of St. Francis, Professor Hammond challenged the participants to consider how Franciscan spirituality can guide communities navigating contemporary realities. Responses were offered by David Couturier, OFM Cap., and Michael Lasky, OFM Conv., who reflected on the practical implications of the Admonitions for leadership, fraternity, and mission today.
The conference concluded with a keynote address by the Most Reverend John Stowe, Bishop of Lexington, Kentucky, USA, entitled “What I Heard: Responding to Our Era of Epochal Change.” Drawing together themes from the gathering, Bishop Stowe encouraged the participants to listen attentively to the signs of the times, the voices of those on the margins, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit as the Franciscan family continues its mission in the twenty-first century.
One highlight of the gathering was the celebration of Mass presided over by the Most Reverend Michael Martin, OFM Conv., Bishop of Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, who also delivered the homily. His message challenged the participants to become the beating Sacred Heart of Jesus in our world today.
