Assisting Ukrainians Suffering From War Trauma

In our friary in Legnica, Poland, from August 7 to 18, the Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) offices of both the Conventual Franciscan Order and the Capuchin Franciscans co-sponsored a Social Theater Workshop.

Social Theater is a discipline closely linked to the Social Sciences and Cultural Anthropology, and is used in several international programs of non-formal education, social inclusion, psychosocial animation, cultural mediation-integration, trauma response, democratization, and social participation.

The Friars worked with Ukrainian Secular Franciscans to organize the workshop. It provided new skills for those who are trying to help Ukrainians suffering from war trauma, especially children.

The Franciscans were able to add a spiritual component that is important in providing integral caregiving to vulnerable people.

At the end of the workshop, participants worked on a plan to initiate Social Theater Groups for Ukrainian children in three locations in Poland and in a town just south of Kyiv in Ukraine.
