Friar Jim Fields

Feeding the Hungry

+Friar Jim Fields opened the Franciscan Shelter House (now the Franciscan Kitchen) in Louisville, Kentucky, on January 5, 1980. While serving in the U.S. Navy Seabees on Okinawa during World War II, he saw people scavenging in garbage for food. That experience gave him the desire to feed the hungry.

Today the Franciscan Kitchen thrives through the efforts of a small staff of lay people and more than 200 regular volunteers. It’s not unusual to serve more than 500 meals each day. The friars still support the Kitchen and Friar George Munjanattu sits on the Board.

Br. Jim died on January 24, 1997.  Listen to his story –
